The best eFoil spots in the North of Mauritius
Mont Choisy
Ten minutes to the west, Mont Choisy unrolls nearly 1.5 km of white sand and has one of the island's most beautiful and calmest lagoons. The water is often clearer than at Grand Baie, with a clear bottom: an outstanding learning and progression ground. Whether at high or low tide, the spot is rideable all year round.
Mont Choisy is also the meeting point for water sports: you'll share the water with Hobie Cats, Optimists, windsurfers, as well as water-skiing and towable rides that keep the lagoon lively, in a friendly, international atmosphere. This nautical buzz, unique to Mont Choisy and largely thanks to Club Med La Pointe aux Canonniers, makes it one of the liveliest spots in the North.
Grand Baie
The iconic spot of the North, and its liveliest heart: a spectacular setting, clear water, easy access and real energy all around. Perfect for a first experience, with a view over the bay as a bonus.
Several launch points let you ride at Grand Baie depending on the time and the crowds: from Eden Beach, the Beach Kitchen or the Beach House, directly from Grand Baie's public beach, or from the quieter public beach at La Cuvette. The right starting point depends on the tide, the wind and the day's traffic.
Pointe aux Canonniers
Between Grand Baie and Mont Choisy, Pointe aux Canonniers is a beautiful spot, with magnificent seabeds gliding beneath the board. Watch out for the point itself though: it's a reef area that needs to be known and avoided. A superb stretch of water, to be ridden with the right local knowledge.
Trou aux Biches
An extension of Mont Choisy, Trou aux Biches has an appealing calm lagoon lined with casuarina trees, but we don't recommend it for eFoiling: the water is too shallow. It's only rideable at high tide, and even then with caution. Spots with a more generous depth are a better choice.
Pereybère
Between Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux, Pereybère is a clear-water cove, a good spot to ride early in the morning before the crowds. Stay alert to swimming areas and swimmers, who are numerous during the day.
Bain Bœuf
On the North coast, Bain Bœuf opens onto a lagoon facing Coin de Mire, in a magnificent setting. A riskier spot: the water is shallow in places and calls for caution. Best reserved for riders who know the water, or a guided session.
Cap Malheureux
At the very tip of the North, Cap Malheureux and its famous red-roofed church offer a unique setting, with views over Coin de Mire, Île Plate and Îlot Gabriel. The spot is more exposed and suits confident riders; it's also a natural starting point for trips out to the northern islets, in favourable conditions.
The Northern Islets: Coin de Mire, Île Plate, Îlot Gabriel (experienced riders)
Facing north stands Coin de Mire (Gunner's Quoin), an iconic islet visible from the coast, then further out Île Plate (Flat Island) and Îlot Gabriel with its turquoise lagoon. These trips out to the islets are reserved for experienced riders, in favourable conditions and always with safety cover at sea. It's the ultimate eFoil adventure in the Mauritian North.
Conditions: wind, tide and the best time to go
For eFoiling, the best windows are early morning or late in the day at sunset: the water is often glassy, the wind is light and boat traffic is lower, with superb light at sunset for riding and for photos. Tide matters too: at low tide, some shallows and coral heads come close to the surface. Knowing these windows is exactly what local guidance gives you.

Every session is private and adapted to your level. The typical flow:
- Choosing the spot and time slot based on the tide, the wind and the day's crowds: the key to a great session.
- Safety briefing and hands-on introduction to the equipment: remote control, posture, speed management.
- Progressive entry into the water: kneeling first, then standing, up to your first flight above the lagoon.
- Constant support: close guidance throughout the session.

Allow around 1 hour per session, though we don't watch the clock: in practice, it's often longer. Sessions run in French or English, and complete beginners are welcome: no experience is needed to take off.

The eFoil is also an experience on land. During your session in Grand Baie, your companions can wait at Eden Beach, the Beach Kitchen or the Beach House, drink in hand, watching you fly over the bay. After the session, we head back to the same spot for a drink and a relaxed debrief.
At Mont Choisy, the mood is more laid-back: lounging on the beach between flights, in the shade of the casuarina trees. A real moment to make of your eFoil session, solo or with friends.

eFoiling is practised with respect for other lagoon users. The essentials:
- Respect swimming areas, marked with yellow buoys, and keep a safe distance from swimmers.
- Ride at a distance from the shore and adapt your speed near swimmers and boats.
- Give way: the eFoil has no right of way over other boats.
- Wear suitable safety gear (vest, leash, protection) and check the weather and tide before heading out.
Watch out for reefs. In Mauritius, lagoons are dotted with coral heads and shallows that come close to the surface, especially at low tide, a real risk for the foil as well as for the coral. Rider's tip: before a session at a new spot, open Google Maps in satellite view to spot reef areas (the dark patches in the lagoon) and plan safe routes. In a guided session, these areas are already known and avoided.
